Important Guidelines

  1. It is an offense under the Passport Act, 1967 to knowingly furnish false information or suppress material information. Passport facilities can be denied on grounds of suppression of factual information, submission of false particulars, willful damage, tampering of official documents or entries or transferring passport.
  2. Passport is an important document and always keep a photocopy of it in safe custody. In the instance of loss/damage/theft of passport, the photocopy you kept will help in faster processing for issuing of a duplicate passport.
  3. Validity of a passport is ten years for adult and five years for minor persons. It is in your interest to ensure passport is valid at least for 6 months at any given time.
  4. Your Indian passport establishes your identity in a foreign country. Application for renewal of Passport can be submitted up to twelve months before its expiry. It is advisable to apply for renewal of passport well in advance to avoid any disruption in your travel plans due to any unforeseen delay in renewing the passport.
  5. A minor is required to have a separate passport. Application for issue of passport to minor requires an additional declaration from both the parents.
  6. Old passport will be returned to the applicant after cancellation at the time of issue of new passport so that the visa on it could be used.
  7. If you acquire citizenship of any other country, Indian passport must be surrendered at the nearest Indian Mission/Post within three months of acquisition of the new citizenship and a certificate obtained.  Please see the page on "Renunciation of Indian Citizenship" for more information.
  8. Check the correctness of all the entries in the passport. If there is any error, send the passport along with a note describing the error within 30 days of receiving your passport. The error will be corrected without any fee. However, if the error is because of incorrect entry in the application, required fee will be charged.

Change/Correction of date of birth or place of birth entries in the passport
