General Guidelines for Indian Passport holders and applicants:

(i) Your passport is a valuable document. It should always be retained either in your private custody or in the custody of a person duly authorized by you. Passport should not be sent out of the country of residence by post. If the passport is lost or destroyed, the fact and circumstances should be immediately reported to the nearest Indian Mission and the local police. PLEASE KEEP A PHOTOCOPY OF YOUR PASSPORT IN A SAFE PLACE. WITHOUT DETAILS OF THE LOST/DAMAGED PASSPORT, THE ISSUE OF A DUPLICATE PASSPORT MAY BE DELAYED.

(ii) It is an offense under the Passports Act 1967 to give false information in the Application. Passport facilities can be denied on grounds of suppression of factual information, submission of false particulars, willful damage of passport and for making unauthorized changes in the Passport.

(iii) Your passport can be impounded or revoked by the Government of India under the provisions of the Passports Act 1967 in which event you will have to surrender the passport to the nearest Indian Passport Issuing Authority.

(iv) If you have acquired US Citizenship, the Indian Passport must be surrendered immediately to the nearest Indian mission. The Indian passport is returned to the applicant after cancellation. The cancelled Indian passport should be kept in safe custody as it may be required at the time of applying for the PIO card/ Visa for the first time.

Note: Application forms should be completed in all respect and submitted with the passport. Misrepresentation/ suppression of facts may result in denial of Passport/Consular services. Incomplete/incorrect applications with inadequate fee or fee not paid in the prescribed manner are liable to be returned without service.

·      It is an offence to hold more than one valid passport at a time

·      Application for reissue of passport can be submitted if the final validity of the passport is less than one year.  The validity of passport cannot be extended beyond the date of its final validity.  An application for reissuing a passport has to be submitted in form for new Passport along with the old passport.  Old Passport in original and additional booklet, if any be submitted along with application. A Passport expired for more than one year should be supported by a notarize Sworn Affidavit explaining the circumstances and spelling out the reasons for late submission.

·          An applicant has the option to apply for an ordinary passport booklet of 36 pages or a Jumbo passport booklet of 60 pages of ten-year validity.

·          A separate passport must be obtained by every individual.  A child’s name can no longer be endorsed on parent’s passport.

·          The applicant can submit the application in person at the Consulate’s counter, by mail or at Consular Camps held at different locations (please see schedule of consular camps).

·          PHOTOGRAPHS: Four recently taken and identical colour photographs of size 3.5x3.5 cm showing front view of full face against light background in civilian clothes taken in a studio (Polaroid photographs, poor quality photographs and photographs with dark glasses or uniform are not accepted) should be submitted along with the application.  One photograph should be affixed on the box and the remaining photographs should be kept in n envelope and attached to the application.  

·          Minors are issued passport for 5 years or up to attaining 15 years, whichever is earlier.

·          Applicants are advised to ensure that their applications in the prescribed format are complete in all respects; that all columns are correctly and legibly filled up and no column is left blank or unfilled/unresponded to or vaguely filled with a dash, tick-mark etc.  All signatures in the application form should be with ballpoint pen as signatures in ink or feather tip pen are likely to smudge while laminating.  Please ensure that the specimen signatures are within the box provided in the application form.

·          Persons holding Indian passports with 20 year validity are advised to apply for a new 10 year validity passport by following requirements applicable for issue of new passport. The new passport will be issued gratis except for return mailing charges of $ 20/-.

·          For change of address, attach documentary evidence such as tax receipt, electricity/telephone or Nativity Certificate issued by the Competent Authority of the State concerned.

·          Emergency Service for issue of passport can be availed by payment of an additional fee of US $ 150/- under the Tatkal Scheme.

·          Incomplete/incorrect applications with inadequate fee or fee not paid in the prescribed manner are liable to be returned without service.

·          The Consulate will not be responsible for loss of applications and passports in mail or misplaced by Travel Agent/Third Person.
